Background: Thomas Sieverts is an award-winning architect, planner and urban theorist. He was a Professor of Urban Design at Technical University Darmstadt from 1971 to 1999, and in 2000 become a Partner of S.K.A.T. Architecten und Stadtplaner. Sieverts also served as Scientific Director for the International Building Exhibition (IBA), Emscher Park, Gelsenkirchen, from 1989 to 1994. He is the author of Zwischenstadt (1997; translated in English in 2004 as Cities without Cities: An interpretation of the Zwischenstadt), which examines the "urbanized landscape" or "landscaped city" as a new and distinctive urban form that is spreading across the globe.
